Alka confesses to her
adulation of Lata Mangeshkar - "She is like a family member, because I have
grown up with her as company". And broadly that is where Alka is classified
today: in the dulcet, sweet, voice - for - the - heroine slot.
Even as she steadily moved ahead in her career, she was largely a crooner
initially, despite being in demand because she was quick on the uptake. Her
high score of hits with every music director who was a major force made her
the busiest singer on the circuit and earned her several unflattering labels
like a 'fluke'. Around 1996 - 7, Alka decided to silence her detractors. She
curtailed her work, so that she would not sound jaded and tired, began to
insist on rehearsals despite her quick grasp and spent more time on riyaaz.
Come 1998 and there was a drastic change in Alka's vocals. A world of expressiveness
and emotions demonstrated the evolution of a singer rather than just a professional
who merely delivered the lines of the lyrics. Among Alka's finest renditions
are her songs from Kachche Dhaage, 'Mehfil Main Baar
Baar' (Soldier), 'Saajan Saajan' (Aarzoo),
her recent songs wherein she has gone beyond the composer's expectations and
the compositions in films like Zakhm, Kaho
Naa.. Pyar Hai and Refugee in particular,
Taal and of course her duet with Jagjit Singh 'Kiska
Chehra' in Tarkeib. Note must also be made of her debut
album Tum Yaad Aaye (late1997) with lyrics by Javed
Akhtar and music by Raju Singh, in which she excelled in most of the tracks.
Current Status
She is still the Queen Bee, with most of the prestigious assignments coming
to her door with no competition in sight.
